How to Care Kokedama Plants in Winter?

• Watering

Watering requirements for kokedama plants are a bit different from ordinary houseplants as they are exposed to the air from all sides, especially, when hanging.

The best method to water a kokedama is soaking.

• Soak the moss ball in a container filled with tepid water.
• Leave it soaked for 5 to 15 minutes depending on the ball size.
• Remove the ball, squeeze it lightly, and place it in a colander to let the water drip for about 20 min.
• Place it back to its place.

During winter, you may need to water a kokedama less often depending on the dryness of the air.

Since this varies depending on the plant and temperatures, the best way to exactly know when to submerge your kokedamas is by lifting the moss ball; If it's lightweight it needs water, this method will also help you connect with your plant and avoid overwatering. 

• Light

During colder months, you need to make sure that the plant is receiving enough light by placing it near a window or at a spot that receives light. If it's a low light plant you can also keep them under home/office light.

Always monitor the leaves once you place them near a window, the cold or sun can burn the plant, make sure the leaves don't touch the glass. Move off the windowsill if you think they may freeze.

• Fertilizer

Your kokedama does not need fertilizer during Winter as the plant is not growing actively in this season. Therefore, you don’t need to worry about it.

• Pruning

You do need to trim your kokedama in Spring, Autumn, and Summer, but nothing to worry about it in Winter. You might notice that your kokedama is losing leaves in Winter like it is in hibernation, but it’s fine.
